Leaving Putts Short

Golfers sometimes say that putting is all about feel. But I talk to a lot of golfers who say that they struggle with consistent distance and they just can't seem to develop a way to putt strictly by feel. And consistent distance is the key to avoiding coming up short. So here is something that I have helped some of my Golf Nut students with.

This works particularly well when you play on your home course consistently, but you can also practice it before a round on the practice green of a golf course that you are visiting.

This golf tip is designed to help you develop a more consistent putting stroke when you may not have good "feel" in your putting game. It takes a little practice, but the payoff is worth it.

First, get on the practice green and work with holes at three different distances, one a short 5-8 foot putt, a medium 12-20 foot putt, and a long 25-40 foot putt. What you want to do is look at your back stroke and pick three different lengths for your putting back stroke that you can use for getting consistent distance on your putts to these holes.

Pick the first distance you want to work on. I recommend to start with the shortest putt, then move to the medium putt, and then on the longer putt. So take a few putts and see how long your back stroke was and what your distance ended up being. Then you want to work on taking the putter back the same distance every time on your back stroke for the distance you need based on the results. Mark the length of your back stroke with a tee off to the side of where your putter ends up to start with. Then after several more practice putts, remove the tee.

Once you have gotten some consistency with the short putt, move to the medium putt and so on. While this may seem a little mechanical, what you will find is that after you practice this drill a bit, you can start to get consistent distance on your back strokes and more consistent distance on your putts. Then you should practice this with holes of many different distances and do it without the tee, but using the same concept of picking a point for your back stroke to end based on the distance you need. You'll be amazed how this will help your putting.
